Seymour Stein Bags 2020 A2IM Lifetime Achievement Award

2020 A2IM Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Seymour Stein and he was recently virtually awarded for his unwavering efforts on co-founding of Sire Records, where he signed notable music icons like the Ramones, the Pretenders, Madonna and Ice-T.

Before he got it big, he humbly worked at indie labels as Syd Nathan’s King Records, which catered and produced songs of Jerry Leiber, Mike Stoller and George Goldner’s Red Bird Records, which brought the world the Shangri-Las and James Brown.

A video was presented before he was rewarded, Richard Gottehrer Sire co-founder cited Stein as bridging the “music industry that grew up in the 40’s all the way to today,” while Talking Heads drummer Chris Franz said the band signed with Sire because Stein understood had nurtured them into a better musician.

The late Tommy Erdelyi of the Ramones said, “one of the things that made Sire great was they knew when they had something good and tried very hard not to mess with it.” In another clip, Ice-T talked expressed his gratitude, and said, ‘Sire “lets you be the artist.”

Madonna’s manager, Guy Oseary, said the queen of pop is so thankful with him. Oseary also mentioned Stein also signed two of his favorite bands, the Smiths and Depeche Mode. Likewise marveling at Stein’s A&R acumen, Ice-T asks, “How do you A&R Ice-T, then the Ramones, then Ministry, then the Talking Heads,” he asked. “How do you do it?”

The award was presented by the head of music at YouTube, Lyor Cohen, Stein with the Lifetime Achievement Award, declaring “aside from being my friend, Seymour Stein is one of the most important music people that ever did this. Not only does he understand songs and artists, but he is the one who goes to the shows. He is the most curious music man I have ever met. He has spent more miles on a plane than all of us put together. He is thirsty to find the next most important act.”

“[Stein] is humble and I so appreciate what you have done for this industry,” Cohen continued. “I wanted to say thank you for trailblazing for us and showing us the way; for staying curious; and believing in the possibilities of our artist. Thank you so much.”

Read Stein’s full speech below:

I was a sickly child, born in Brooklyn with a hole in my heart on April 18, 1942 — the day General Doolittle bombed Tokyo in retaliation for Pearl Harbor months earlier.

I couldn’t play sports, but fortunately got hooked on music early on, listening to my elder sister Ann’s radio in the bedroom we shared.

Among the early records I heard and enjoyed were “Rose, Rose I Love You” by Yah Lee in Chinese and “Aufweidersehn Sweetheart” a German tune sung by English songstress Vera Lynn in English.

It made me believe that great pop music could come from anywhere, something I never forgot.

As I got healthier and went to public school, I saved all my money to buy records. All of my favorite records and artists were on indie labels, like Fats Domino and Smiley Lewis on Imperial, Little Richard and Larry Williams on Specialty, Clyde McPhatter & the Drifters, Joe Turner, Ray Charles, LaVerne Baker on Atlantic, Jerry Butler, Dee Clark on Vee Jay, James Brown, Hank Ballard, and Little Willie John on King and many other great indie artists.

Elvis was my favorite artist on a major, RCA Victor, but it must be remembered that Elvis’ first six singles were on Sam Phillip’s Sun label in Memphis and also home to Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Roy Orbison.

It is my strong belief that these and other great indie labels should be honored by A2IM, for their pioneering efforts that blazed the trail for all of us.

Atlantic is the last of these labels and one of the two or three most successful in today’s market. I’m sure the Craig Kallman who started there at a very young age, learned much from Ahmet Ertegun and Jerry Wexler.

When I was 15, I went up to the Billboard offices to do some research on the music business in the 1930’s and ‘40’s. Billboard chart manager Tom Noonan was very kind and supplied me with a desk and access to the bound volumes that they still have. I made many notes. I also met Paul Ackerman, the music editor, and reporter, Bob Rolantz, a former A&R man at RCA’s Groove label. Paul and Bob invited me to attend the weekly meetings where the reporters would choose the Spotlight records of the week. Other reporters included Ren Grevatt and June Bundy, whose husband Charlie Grean was one of the most powerful music execs at the time. The panel often gave me the opportunity to voice my opinion.

I noted that almost all the guests at this event were indie label execs, including Ahmet Ertegun and Jerry Wexler at Atlantic, Leonard Chess, George Goldner at Gone/End, Jerry Blaine at Jubilee, Herman Lubinsky at Savoy and many others, but most important to my future, Syd Nathan at King Records.

When I graduated high school, Tom Noonan offered me a full time job at Billboard as his assistant in the chart department. I helped him put together his idea to start a Top 100 singles chart, since renamed the Hot 100, which was of great service to music dealers and radio stations.

One day, Syd Nathan asked me, if I wanted to be a journalist or a record man and invited me to move to Cincinnati and be his assistant. I jumped at the opportunity and stayed at King for several years. But I missed New York and eventually moved back. Soon after that, George Goldner reached out to me. He informed me that he had just started Red Bird Records with Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller in the Brill Building. Once again I jumped at the opportunity. In the Brill Building, I met Richard Gottehrer, whose office was also there. We became friends and decided to work together.

When I started Sire with Richard Gottehrer, most of our early signings came from CBGB’s on the Bowery, including Ramones, Talking Heads, Richard Hell & the Voidoids, Tom Tom Club, Dead Boys and the Paley Brothers.

I never lost my belief that great music could come from anywhere in the world and headed for London. I eventually bought a flat to work and live from and was offered the opportunity to buy 50% interest in Blue Horizon Records by ace producer Mike Vernon. The label boasted the talents of Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac and Chicken Shack, featuring Christine Perfect, who later married John McVie and joined Fleetwood Mac, and several other blues acts.

It was quite easy traveling to Europe, where I signed Dutch band Focus, whose album Moving Waves sold over 650,000 in the U.S. and contained the single, “Hocus Pocus,” which sold well over 1,000,000 in the U.S. We had world rights everywhere except Benelux and the album did well all over the world.

With the success of Focus, we were able to buy two connecting brownstones on West 74th Street and hire a good staff. Sire’s first office was in a brownstone at 146 West 54th Street, Syd Nathan rented the floor for $325.00 a month.

With a much larger office and a really good staff, we were able to build a studio with air conditioning. I took advantage of this by spending much more time in UK and Europe.

I had already signed the Pretenders and Climax Blues Band. Among the other UK bands signed to Sire were the Smiths, Depeche Mode, the Cure, Erasure, Echo & the Bunnymen, Soft Cell, the Cult, Spacehog, Yaz(oo), Mark-Almond, Ride, Rezillos, the Farm, Everything But the Girl, Modern English, Morcheeba, Aphex Twin, Ride, the Undertones, James. Hopefully, I got them all.

As previously mentioned Focus from Holland, the Undertones from Ireland, HIM from Finland, Plastic Bertrand from Belgium, Ofra Haza from Israel, k.d. lang and Barenaked Ladies from Canada, David Rudder from Trinidad and The Saints and Radio Birdman,  the first two bands to be inducted to Australia’s Rock Hall of Fame.

Back in the USA, I signed two longtime friends Cyndi Lauper and Debbie Harry, who had gone solo. Also, Andy Paley produced a great album by Jerry Lee Lewis.

On a hunch, I journeyed to LA and San Francisco, since all of the hot rappers thus far had come from the East Coast or Midwest.  I discovered Ice-T and his brilliant young manager, Jorge Hinojosa. I signed Ice, who became the first successful rapper for Warner Bros., Sire’s distributor. Back in the States, I also signed the Replacements in Minneapolis. Also, Ministry in Chicago and Dinosaur Jr. in Massachusetts.

I was perhaps most proud then for the opportunity to sign Lou Reed back then. We released the amazing New York album, a world-wide hit — platinum in USA and gold in France, UK, and I believe Canada, as well.

I am currently unemployed, having left Sire and Warner’s behind two years ago. At present I am reactivating Blue Horizon with the help and support of Matthew Johnson at Fat Possum.  He’s someone you should really consider for A2IM induction. He’s an indie all the way and a great one.

If I have any regrets and I do, it’s that I did not have enough time to spend with my daughter, Samantha, who sadly passed away; and Mandy. Hopefully, when Mandy and my three granddaughters hear this, they will understand me better and forgive me.

Again, many, many thanks for the award. I have been inducted in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the Songwriters Hall of Fame and in 2018 was presented with a special, Lifetime Achievement Grammy. That said, this A2IM award strikes closer to home. Many thanks!!

Also very special thanks to Lyor Cohen. I could not think of anyone better and more special to induct me!!!

Music Icons Respond to Black Live Matters

Black Live Matters – Protests have erupted and gather around themselves in New York, Minneapolis, Louisville, Denver, Memphis Phoenix and Columbus and other cities—as demonstrators demand arrest of the four officers allegedly involved in the death of George Floyd with unfair and unjust charges. To add the fire, the controversial statement of the President has caused outraged from the netizens.

With the injustice and untimely death of George’s Floyd, the celebrities including Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish, Justin Bieber, Cardi B, and more have express their stance against the violence towards black community.

Pop superstar Taylor Swift bravely mentioned President Trump on her tweet: “After stoking the fires of white supremacy and racism your entire presidency, you have the nerve to feign moral superiority before threatening violence? ‘When the looting starts the shooting starts’??? We will vote you out in November. @realdonaldtrump.”

59th Grammy Award big winner pop Singer- Bilie Eilish also tweeted towards the injustices. But in a fiery Instagram post, she clarified the generational stakes for her fellow white people — listen, learn, support, but don’t make any of this about you.

“If I hear one more white person say ‘All Lives Matter’ one more f— time I’m gonna lose my f— mind,” she wrote. “Will you shut the f— up? No one is saying your life doesn’t matter. No one is saying your life is not hard. No one is saying literally anything at all about you…… All you mfs do is find a way to make everything about yourself. This is not about you. Stop making everything about you. You are not in need. You are not in danger.”

Ariana Grande addressed her 74 million followers, saying “text FLOYD to 55156 @colorofchange to put pressure on DA Mike Freeman to charge and arrest these officers call 612-348-5550,” adding, “and please sign the @change petition.”

Cardi B on Instagram wrote, “Enough is enough! What will it take? A civil war? A new president? Violent riots? It’s tired! I’m tired! The country is tired! You don’t put fear in people when you do this you just show how coward YOU ARE ! And how America is really not the land of the free! ”

Music icon Beyoncé postedd on an Instagram strongly invoked that the police officers involved in Floyd’s killing should be charged (Dennis Chauvin, the officer who knelt on Floyd’s neck, was charged Friday with third-degree manslaughter and murder): “We all witnessed his murder in broad daylight. We’re broken and we’re disgusted. We cannot normalize this pain. I’m not only speaking to people of color. If you’re white, black, brown, or anything in between, I’m sure you feel hopeless about the racism going on in America right now. No more senseless killings of human beings. No more seeing people of color as less than human. We can no longer look away.”

LeBron James Instagramed a picture captioned “this is why” to his nearly 63 million followers of an officer kneeling on Floyd’s neck beside a picture of former NFL athlete Colin Kaepernick kneeling during the national anthem (Jamie Foxx and others shared this photo, too).

Justin Bieber, though, posted an image of a man (likely him) atop a graffitied building looking out at the horizon, captioned “No lives matter until black lives matter” — but the graffiti is a Russian expletive that translates to derogatory slur in English.

Madonna grooved with Michael Jackson’s hit “They Don’t Care About Us” in their kitchen, which has gathered negative connotations from people like former NBA player Rex Chapman who replied: “Maybe the worst tweet of all time. ‘come dance in the kitchen for racism’ is a weird take. To Michael Jackson? And other things.”

Killer Mike, also tweeted. “I’m mad as hell. I woke up wanting to see the world burn yesterday, because I’m tired of seeing black men die … So that’s why children are burning it to the ground. They don’t know what else to do. And it is the responsibility of us to make this better right now. We don’t want to see one officer charged, we want to see four officers prosecuted and sentenced. We don’t want to see Targets burning, we want to see the system that sets up for systemic racism burnt to the ground.”

That lawsuit was settled out of court.

The two children, Damian Hurley and Kira Kerkorian, have been named in recent court fights over whether they will be heirs in the trust set up by Bing’s father.

Music Producer Andres Markmann Reveals How to Form a Band in a Pandemic

The distance consolidation of collaborative projects along with new ways of creating content is one of the many outcomes of the “new normal” the pandemic has set for us, even when referring to music. This is how, towards the end of 2019, DPM Band was born and grew throughout the COVID-19 quarantine.

DPM Band is an electronic duo that consists of Andres Markman, composer and music producer, and singer and also composer Diego Poupin. They studied together at a music academy when they were 12 years old in their home country of Chile but later grew apart. Three decades later, Andres from New York and Diego from London met again and merged into this project that overcame distance and united talent by being carried out entirely in a remote setting.

Andres is a well-known music producer with more than 15 years of experience in the music industry. He has participated in popular commercial jingles, film soundtracks, and has produced important musicalization of events and television programs. For this and many other reasons, he belongs to the artist catalog of Onmi Music Publishing and EMI Music.

Reflecting on his success with DPM Band, Andres says, “Music is networking, perseverance, and networking.” Under this premise, Andres and Diego have decided to venture with the development of this electronic music project with the combination of many rhythms such as progressive electronic rock, minimal, and dubstep, where they collaborate and produce new music trends. Due to the success and positive impact, they are already preparing a short film to explain in detail how to form a band during a pandemic, overcoming obstacles, and making meaningful contributions to achieve recognition in the world of music. “Where the Angels Speak” is this band’s recent release and shared with the public on the Music DPM website.

Singer-Songwriter Jared Harper Takes the Industry by Storm with His Electric New Single, “All for Me”

In an industry fueled by creativity and talent, only those who embrace their uniqueness can leave a legacy that will live on for years on end. Such is the case with Jared Harper, a singer and songwriter whose career has revolutionized the music scene in ways no one could have ever imagined. With an old soul and a remarkable talent, the artist brings the pop/rock genre to a whole new level.

Although he has already established a reputable standing in the music scene with his solo debut in 2018, Jared Harper has once again taken center stage with his amazing cover of “Dynamite” by BTS. Despite having a reputation for gravitating towards older songs, the artist gave the internet a pleasant surprise with a BTS cover that showcases his jazzy and funky groove. Sure enough, this rising star knows how to keep his fans up on their toes.

Born and raised in San Francisco, California, Jared Harper is best known for earning over 650,000 views on YouTube for his blind audition of The Voice Season 18. In the said performance, he took everyone’s breath away with his rendition of “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” by The Rolling Stones, where he performed his unique acoustic version of the classic hit.

Since dipping his toes into the industry, Jared Harper has garnered over 45,000 streams on his standout single “About You,” released in February 2021. Most recently, on May 14, 2021, he was able to unleash the ultimate party-rock earworm in his alt-indie-rock anthem, “All for Me,” which highlighted vintage Strokes-inspired bouncing guitars and built a tension that cut right through the song’s verses. The said song was created in collaboration with Josh Tyrrell, who recorded the instrumentals as well as mixed and mastered the single in Telstar Studios (London).

According to the singer and songwriter, “All for Me” was written as a thunder-cracking form of encouragement to never miss out on the good times nor to let others miss out on all the fun. On a mission to boost everyone’s mood in 2021, Jared Harper continues to breathe life into the song.

“It resonates today more than it did back then. I am hoping that ‘All for Me’ will inspire people to loosen up and allow themselves to break out of the moments they are stuck in,” Jared Harper explained. “I wanted an upbeat, passionate, and energetic song that anyone can rock out to. Thus, I created ‘All for Me.’ I can’t wait to get back out on the scene, perform live, and interact with a crowd,” the artist added.

Immensely fueled by his desire to merge the music of the 50s, 60s, and 70s into modern sound, Jared Harper separates himself from a sea of artists in the industry. As a matter of fact, his single, “If I Can’t Have You,” speaks volumes about his character as an artist and has created a buzz in the international music and radio scene.

As can be gleaned from his flourishing career, Jared Harper has a penchant for capturing his audience almost instantaneously with his catchy rhythms and melodies. With music that transcends diverse age groups and meaningful lyrics that are also relatable, he appeals to listeners of all ages and walks of life.

Above anything else, Jared Harper is hailed for being charming and witty on stage when performing in front of his fans. Without a doubt, it is only a matter of time before this must-watch artist becomes a household name.
