Keenan Shotwell: How His Music has Brought a Sense of Hope and Change

Music can stir emotions and make anyone feel as if they are transported to another time and place. Memphis-based musician Keenan Shotwell believes in the power of music to make people realize and celebrate all that they have in common with other people. No matter what genre or style of music, Shotwell believes that it can touch people’s lives. The music he creates does not stick to any one genre. Instead, he prefers to make songs that bridge the gap between different styles, making for a more enriching experience

Keenan Shotwell started playing music at a young age. He practiced music at the Jackson Studios during the early 90s. After graduating from Whitehaven High School in 1993, Shotwell mastered the piano and organ while a student at the University of Memphis. As his skills grew and his talent flourished, Shotwell began making a name for himself as a captivating musician in his hometown. Soon, he would be known in the entire region for his striking creative ear for the musical arts.

As a musician and songwriter, Keenan Shotwell pays particular attention to the lyrics he writes. He explained, “Lyrics create the content that reaches the heartstrings of a person’s life. No matter what genre or style, the lyrics will be the point of connection for many listeners. Through the words I use in my songs, I hope that I can help break down barriers and create an artistic vehicle that many can relate to. I want my music and my songs to be a force for good.”

Music has historically had an impact on many lives, and Keenan Shotwell aims to keep with that tradition by making music that makes people feel deeply about certain things. The musician has also stated that he is not afraid to write songs about complex topics because those are still a part of life. “I’m not afraid to write about abortion, discrimination, war, and other topics considered difficult or taboo. For me, real change happens when I write songs and create music through the lens of others,” he explained. “And given the content of some of my songs, I know that most people may  not  receive it well the first time they hear it, but they will appreciate my songs down the line once they realize the value of the message I convey through my music.”

With such a sought-after talent in his hometown, this enabled Keenan Shotwell to perform with various other artists while earning numerous awards. He won the Verizon Wireless How Sweet the Sound award twice. In addition, Shotwell has shared the stage with several renowned artists such as Melba Moore, DeDe Bridgewater, and Kurt Whalum and performed for the MLK50 Tribute and The Herbie Hancock Tribute. His music has also graced films, one of which is the 2010 film The Grace Card.

Keenan Shotwell recently announced the release date of his newest song on May 13, 2022. In an Instagram post, Shotwell said that his single “Touch the Sky” is now available on all music platforms. “This project may have taken me a little longer than I anticipated, but it will now be heard all over the world,” the musician said.

Music has been a constant companion to Keenan Shotwell since childhood, growing up learning how to play music and write songs. With his impactful lyrics, Shotwell aims to inspire his listeners. He said, “My ultimate goal is to make music that moves people and encourages them to grow into better versions of themselves.” www.keenanshotwell.com.
