Gremlins Director Alleges Baby Yoda of Being a Mock-Up

First, it was Baby Groot. Now Baby Yoda has a quibble with the Gremlins?

Joe Dante, the director of Gremlins and its sequel, was not pleased with how far the Star Wars character got in his films. He said that this well-known green-skinned man took on too much.

“I think the longevity of [Gremlins] is really key to this one character [Gizmo], who is essentially like a baby,” Dante said. “Which brings me, of course, to the subject of Baby Yoda, who is completely stolen and is just out-and-out copied. Shamelessly, I would think.”

The Chronicle did not further explain Dante’s comments but pointed out that the director “is not one to hold a grudge” and “isn’t thinking of suing Disney and Lucasfilm.”

Gizmo is the lead Mogwai character in Gremlins and Gremlins 2: The New Batch. On the other hand, Grogu, aka Baby Yoda, was presented in the first episode of Disney and Lucasfilm’s Star Wars spin-off series.

The adorableness of Baby Yoda has made him an online sensation and created a massive merchandise opportunity.

This fall, HBO Max is premiering Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai. The new animated series stars the voice of Ming-Na Wen, BD Wong, and James Hong.

Baby Yoda has expressed his own problems with a pint-size pop culture personality, Baby Groot. On Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update in 2019, actor Kyle Mooney said he accepts that he “has his haters.”

“If I may, Baby Groot, do me a favor,” he cautioned. “Keep my name out of your little tree mouth before I snap you like a twig.”
