No stranger to the spotlight, Georgia Starnes knows what it’s like to capture the attention of millions week after week on “The Voice.” Earning a four-chair turn from Michael Bublé, Reba McEntire, Gwen Stefani, and Snoop Dogg after a powerful performance of “Too Good at Goodbyes” by Sam Smith during the blind audition, the singer/songwriter from Texas continues to triumph through the battle rounds, honing her craft as a member of Team Snoop. Since arriving in Los Angeles, the 22-year-old model and vocalist seems to be steadily building a name for herself with performances around the city and other music events like the recent Stagecoach Festival. Now, she’s diving deeper into her artistry with “You and I,” her upcoming single set to release on November 15, 2024.
The song, which Starnes likens to an indie pop ballad, was written and produced by Nick Brown, lead singer of the band MONA. Perhaps one of the touching parts is the chorus where she sings: “Well you know they say / That life can get so lonely / It’s not that way / When you’re right there to hold me / Yea you know me I’ll be fine / Going through this life / You and I.” The beautiful work, recorded and produced in Nashville, captures Starnes’ growth as an artist and marks an exciting new chapter in her musical journey.
According to Starnes, “You and I” will be open to everyone’s unique interpretation,” she says. “It’s whatever that thing is or that person that gets them through this life and makes them feel less lonely.” For her, music is her lifeline. “I resonate with this song, and it hits hard for me because I feel like my gift is singing music. Art, in general, just has held me, making me feel less lonely in this life. It’s also a way of talking about my relationship with myself and thanking my gift because I don’t have a relationship that does that. For me, it’s been my gift—and my relationship in my life has been the strongest with music and art.”
“You and I” is a fresh direction for the talented independent artist. While it might be challenging to pinpoint Starnes’ musical genre style because she can sing everything from R&B, soul, indie pop, and rock, she says this song is more stripped down and raw than her usual music, which she likes to refer to as “Glitter Soul.” As for the vibe, she shares that the song inspires people to take a second, to take a breath, and soon they’ll find that it gives them new life because it has kind of a sexy, sultry vibe while also being very awakening.
Starnes’ journey to becoming a rising star is anything but ordinary. After joining The Voice, she quickly gained fans and new followers, drawn to her powerful voice and stage presence. So far, her time on the show has been transformative, especially with the multi-talented artist Snoop Dogg mentoring her. Among the awesome advice he has given her, Starnes says that he told her, “Nobody can be you as well as you can be you—which I’ve always believed. I’ve never wanted to be anybody else besides me because I like being me. I can only be myself. It’s fun, and I like it.”
As Starnes’ career evolves to the next level, the singer looks forward to the ride. For now, she’ll keep doing what she’s doing—performing her heart out and touching everyone along the way.
