In the heart of New York City, where vibrant street art mingles with the buzz of everyday life, Luke Kohen, and Return of the Bard emerged as a symbol of transformation and resilience. Luke’s journey from personal despair to becoming a beacon of hope and empowerment is more than just a story of individual triumph—it’s a reflection of the unbreakable spirit within us all.

Luke Kohen grew up in a lower-middle-class family deeply involved in the arts, splitting his childhood between Brooklyn and Staten Island. His environment was rich in creativity but also fraught with challenges. Growing up around gangs, graffiti, and drugs, he faced numerous close calls and periods of self-destruction. Yet, amid the chaos, he always had a drive—a spark waiting to ignite.

Turning Pain into a Spiritual Awakening

The tragic loss of his brother-in-law in the 9/11 attacks pushed Kohen further into addiction and mental health struggles. However, this intense pain also triggered a profound spiritual awakening. His journey into the depths of despair prompted an inward exploration through yoga, eventually leading him to India’s chaotic yet serene environment in search of healing through ancient wisdom.

This transformative journey wasn’t just a personal rebirth for Kohen; it also led to the creation of his mentoring & coaching business in 2015. This venture, driven by his unwavering commitment to unity, creative solutions, and holistic well-being, was built on eighteen years of apprenticeships with lineage holders and master healers. The invaluable wisdom he gained became the foundation of his mission.

Reflecting on his path, he acknowledges that self-improvement work is never truly complete. “The work is never done; however, from a place of joy and reclaimed innocence, I can look back and find appreciation, peace, and humor at all the lessons learned along the way,” he shares. Among the most significant challenges he faced were moments of deep despair when he felt life was unbearable. Physical ailments, including autoimmune diseases and mold poisoning, severely limited his ability to perform basic activities, leaving him exhausted and struggling to find the will to carry on.

Luke also grappled with depression and addictions, compounded by inherited trauma that required him to delve into profound grief, shame, and loss. The process of healing from these issues was arduous, involving not only physical and mental suffering but also emotional pain from major breakups and betrayals. These personal relationships, while painful, ultimately taught him the most about human nature and the importance of self-compassion and resilience

Music played a crucial role in Luke’s journey, acting as a form of alchemy that helped him transform his pain into something meaningful. After a particularly devastating breakup, he wrote a song that allowed him to process his emotions more swiftly and effectively than ever before. This experience highlighted the therapeutic power of music and its ability to provide clarity and peace during tumultuous times.

A turning point in Luke’s life came when he encountered a quote about the value of conquering oneself over defeating others. Luke shares, “It said, ‘What is greater, a man who conquers 500 men or a man who conquers himself?’ That really hit me, and I realized the value and virtue of doing my inner work would make all the difference. The ‘battleground’ of this lifetime was an internal one.” This realization, coupled with the profound impact of reading “Autobiography of a Yogi,” underscored the importance of inner work and self-actualization. This period of enlightenment led him to make dramatic lifestyle changes, including quitting alcohol, drugs, and other unhealthy habits. These changes marked the beginning of a nearly two-decade-long commitment to sobriety and personal growth.

Luke advises others facing similar struggles to seek out mentors they can trust and to fully dedicate themselves to the process of spiritual and personal development. He emphasizes the importance of understanding life’s impermanence and encourages a courageous, all-in approach to self-improvement. While the journey may be challenging, he assures that it is ultimately worthwhile.

In his music, Luke infuses messages of empowerment and resilience, hoping to transmit his lived experiences through his lyrics and energy. He believes that those who resonate with his music will nourish their internal guidance systems beyond societal conditioning.

By learning to grieve effectively, individuals can make space for magic and transformation in their lives. Luke’s ultimate hope is that his story and music inspire others to persevere through dark times, reminding them that brighter days await those who continue to show up and do the work, with the support of others being a vital part of this journey.
