The Washington International Young Artists Music Series (WIYAMS), a non-profit initiative founded by the International Arts Development and Promotion Association in collaboration with the Bulgarian Music Society and The Catholic University of America, opened its 2026 season with a refined and stylistically diverse concert. Dedicated to fostering a global platform for emerging musicians, WIYAMS continues to expand its international reach, drawing over 150 applicants this year from nearly 15 countries. This spirit of international collaboration and artistic exchange was clearly reflected in the season’s opening event.

Held on March 29, 2026, at 4:00 PM at McNeir Auditorium in Washington, DC, Sunday’s program presented a curated selection of works ranging from Franz Schubert to Greg Pattillo, alongside compositions by Heitor Villa-Lobos, Francis Poulenc, Nikolai Medtner, Katherine Hoover, and Robert Schumann. The performances were marked by technical assurance and interpretive clarity, underscoring the series’ emphasis on artistic quality and thoughtful programming.

WIYAMS Artist Huihui Lou, soprano, is a vocalist with a growing international presence. In the concert, she performed Richard Strauss’ 6 Lieder, Op. 68, including “Als mir dein Lied erklang,” in collaboration with pianist Janghyo Yoo. Her performance combined tonal warmth, expressive phrasing, and textual clarity, demonstrating both stylistic versatility and a deep understanding of the German Lied tradition.

Continuing the program’s emphasis on depth and individuality, pianist and WIYAMS artist Nicholaus Poelwijk delivered a focused and expressive account of Nikolai Medtner’s Romantic Sketches for the Young, Op. 54. He is recognized for his advocacy of composers such as Donald Keats. His playing combined technical clarity, nuanced phrasing, and interpretive depth, bringing both the lyrical and dramatic elements of Medtner’s work to vivid life.

As the opening concert concluded, WIYAMS set a compelling tone for its 2026 season, one defined by artistic diversity, technical excellence, and a commitment to nurturing the next generation of musicians. By bringing together a wide array of repertoire and performers, the series highlights emerging talent while affirming the enduring vitality and adaptability of classical music in an increasingly connected artistic world. The evening continued with a reception that offered a valuable opportunity for artists and audience members to connect more personally, fostering conversation, reflection, and a shared sense of community. In this way, WIYAMS extends its impact beyond the stage, creating an environment in which artistic exchange and human connection are equally central to its mission.
