Xue Ding represents a remarkable blend of talent, dedication, and achievement in the world of music. As she pursues her Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Stony Brook University, her journey captures the attention of both peers and audiences. Her commitment to viola performance and research, notably her scholarly work on Charles Loeffler’s compositions, showcases a depth of understanding rarely seen in emerging artists. Her dynamic presence on stage and focus on academic excellence set her apart in a highly competitive field.

Academic Excellence: Inheriting a Legacy Excellence

Xue is trained under elite masters worldwide. Her teachers include Lawrence Dutton, Craig Mumm, and Patinka Kopec, to name a few. It was when moving to NYC to pursue her B.M. degree at Mannes where her passion for music flourished. She earned her first master’s degree in viola performance from the New England Conservatory. Following this, she honed her skills further at the Manhattan School of Music where she received a post-graduate Performance Certificate, and another master’s degree in the prestigious and selective orchestra program. Now at Stony Brook University, besides further improving her performance skills, she’s also expanding her knowledge by learning more about music history, music theory and how to create meaningful scholarly articles and books. As a doctoral candidate, her scholarly pursuits are enriched by her teaching role. As a teaching assistant, she shares her knowledge with undergraduate students, fostering a new generation of musicians.

Research award Spotlight: ‘Charles Loeffler’s Two Songs’ – A Study of Influence

Ms. Ding’s research paper, “Charles Loeffler’s Two Songs With Viola and Piano Accompaniment and Their French Influence,” recently won the prestigious Dalton Research Competition. This significant achievement highlights her ability to merge artistry with scholarship. Through her analysis, she uncovers the nuances of Loeffler’s work and its connections to late nineteenth -century French musical, and literature influences, especially the influences from the two prominent Symbolism poets— Baudelaire and Verlaine whose poems were used in Loeffler’s songs. The publication of her research as a featured article in the Journal of the American Viola Society further attests to her scholarly prowess and dedication to the viola community.

Ms. Ding’s dedication is evident through her numerous accomplishments in music competitions. Notably, she won the Fuchs Chamber Music Competition, the Widder String Quartet Competition, first prize in International Shining Stars Competition, second prize in New York Artists International Competition, gold prize in International Virtuoso Competition, award winner at New York International Music Concours, to name a few. Her impressive accolades reflect not only her technical prowess but also the interpretive depth she brings to her performances, making her a standout in the classical music arena.

Prestigious Venues: Making Her Mark on Iconic Stages

Her awards and recognition brought her to performing at esteemed venues like Weill Recital Hall and Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall, Jordan Hall, Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall and Merkin Hall, Symphony Space,United Nations, Canada National Arts Center, Beijing Concert Hall, and China National Center for Performing Arts solidifies her status as a rising star in the world of classical music. With each accolade, Ding continues to inspire younger musicians seeking to follow in her footsteps.

Principal Performances: Leading the Symphony Orchestras

In her role as principal violist, Ms. Ding has led various ensembles, including the Manhattan School of Music Symphony Orchestra, the Stony Brook University Symphony Orchestra as well as the New York State Symphony Orchestra. Her leadership on the stage not only highlights her technical proficiency but also her ability to inspire fellow musicians. As a prominent figure within these ensembles, she balances the responsibilities of performing and guiding, ensuring that collective expressions of artistry remain at the forefront.

Throughout her career, Ms. Ding has graced various notable music festivals since as Sarasota Music Festival, Aspen Music Festival, Young Artist Program at Canada National Arts Center, Music Mountain Music Festival, Bowdoin Music Festival, Maine Chamber Seminar, Summit Music Festival, and Heifetz Summer Music Institute. These music festivals served as platforms for her to shine. Her fresh interpretations and passionate performances resonate with audiences, capturing their attention. Teaching and Mentorship: Shaping Future Musicians

Now as a teacher, Ms. Ding plays an integral role in shaping the next generation of musicians. She imparts her knowledge through instructing individual lessons and group lessons, coaching chamber music and leading student orchestras. By fostering an environment of mutual learning, she inspires students to explore their musical potential. Her mentorship extends beyond technical skill to encompass the importance of creativity and interpretation in music.

Future Aspirations: Goals Beyond the Doctorate Degree

Ding’s ambitions extend beyond her academic achievements. While pursuing her Doctorate, she aims to expand her influence in both performance and education. She envisions creating opportunities for classical music to be more accessible to be able to touch more people. She has brought music to public libraries, schools, as well as senior homes to perform and introduce the instrument. Moreover, after learning how to write academic articles and books, she now has the ambition to reach more students by writing more educational articles and books. Dual focus on education and performance underscores her commitment to classical music.
