With their bold plans for DC Entertainment, James Gunn and Peter Safran have sparked controversy, eliciting reactions that range from applause to criticism.
Fans were surprised last week by the news that DC Studios could go ahead with a Superman movie without Henry Cavill in the lead role.
This new direction will be explored by producer and studio co-chair Safran, who was just appointed last October. So is it possible we’re witnessing another vision of the ‘Man of Steel’?
On Monday, Gunn took to social media to address a strong wave of online criticism following the announcement of Cavill’s non-involvement, though he didn’t specify who the argument was.
“One of the things Peter & I were aware of when we took the job as heads of DC Studios was a certain minority of people online that could be, well, uproarious & unkind, to say the least,” he tweeted.
“Our choices for the DCU are based upon what we believe is best for the story & best for the DC characters who have been around for nearly 85 years. These choices are great, perhaps not, but they are made with sincere hearts & integrity & always with the story in mind.
Backlash Won’t Impact Gunn and Safran
He and Safran have faced worse adversity in their careers than they have in their name, but retaliation never lets them influence their actions. The two take a strong stance to stand up for what’s right no matter what, and they make a firm commitment.
“We were aware there would be a period of turbulence when we took this gig, & we knew we would sometimes have to make difficult & not-so-obvious choices, especially in the wake of the fractious nature of what came before us,” he added.
“But this means little to us in comparison to our jobs as artists & custodians in helping to create a wide & wonderful future for DC.”
The upcoming Superman film, helmed by the director of Suicide Squad, won’t explore his inception. Instead, it will delve into a lesser-known chapter in Clark Kent’s life – requiring a new actor to take on the iconic role.
However, the filmmaker has expressed his admiration for Cavill, expressing a desire to collaborate with him on another future project. Unfortunately, the highly-anticipated Superman film is still shrouded in mystery – no further news has been released.
Cavill’s surprise departure stunned fans, particularly after his recent cameo appearance in Black Adam. His momentary presence stole the show, as only Superman could do when he met Dwayne Johnson’s dark antihero for a thrilling clash of wills.
Cavill sent a message to his devoted fans on Instagram: he was “back” as the much-beloved character and tantalizingly promised more information in the near future.

Find Another Actor
In a monumental shakeup, DC Studios has recruited Gunn and Safran to helm their operations – the two will now serve as co-chairmen and CEOs of one of Hollywood’s most prestigious studios.
DC fans everywhere were enthralled when Gunn announced on Twitter that he was at work writing a new Superman movie. Plans are in the results to bring another actor into the iconic role.
Henry Cavill, who made his legendary transformation into Superman in the 2013 blockbuster Man of Steel and further cemented himself as DC’s caped hero with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, recently spoke out about plans to recast.
“The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck and the happiest of fortunes,” he said.
DC’s movie universe is buzzing with excitement as the appointment of Gunn, and Safran has sparked speculation about what their new leadership will mean for upcoming films. Fans eagerly anticipate how these two acclaimed directors could shape DC’s cinematic future.
Gunn tweeted that he and Safran have “a DC slate ready to go, which we couldn’t be more over the moon about.”
DC’s upcoming plans are set to be unveiled in early 2023, granting us a sneak preview of the thrilling schedule coming our way, Gunn added.

Plan for the Studio
Additionally, Gunn recently had a sit-down session with Ben Affleck to explore options for collaborating with the studio on future projects.
“He wants to direct & we want him to direct; we just have to find the right project,” Gunn said.
Ben Affleck is stepping back into the cape and cowl to team up with Ezra Miller in The Flash.
This week, Patty Jenkins set the record straight about her continued involvement with DC Comics – despite speculation that Wonder Woman 3 won’t be happening.
She took to social media to dispel any rumors, confirming her ongoing commitment and dedication to telling heroic stories in the iconic universe.
Furthermore, she said, “there was nothing I could do to move anything forward.”
Meanwhile, Gunn wants to reassure fans about his future plans for the studio.
The DC universe could be in for a major shakeup, as The Hollywood Reporter predicts significant changes on the horizon—including Gal Gadot’s potential departure from her iconic role of Wonder Woman.
Gunn skyrocketed to fame for his captivating direction of Guardians of the Galaxy, becoming one of Marvel’s leading superhero directors.
After helming the widely-acclaimed Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, Gunn is now set to bring us one final mission from Star-Lord and his misfit crew with next year’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
But first, he has some exciting projects lined up on DC’s front – including Peacemaker starring John Cena, reprising his role as seen in The Suicide Squad.
