The collaboration pairs AL99’s contemporary sound with the veteran lyricism of The Legendary Smooth B, bringing two eras of hip hop together on one track.
When The Legendary Smooth B first heard AL99’s “Superduper,” he was riding through New York with his business partner, King YaYa. The bass-heavy production caught his attention first, followed by AL99’s lyrics and delivery.
“Yo, play that again,” he said.
The second listen was enough. The Legendary Smooth B, known as one half of the early 1990s hip hop duo Nice & Smooth, turned to King YaYa and made his interest clear: “Yo, I’d jump on that track with him, man.”
The connection was closer than either artist might have expected. King YaYa also works as AL99’s business partner. Introductions followed. The two artists recorded and mixed a new version of the song, and “SUPERDUPER – Remix” was born. The track drew tens of thousands of Spotify streams during its first week.
Two Generations on One Track
For AL99, the collaboration offered a chance to bring different periods of hip hop into the same conversation.
“I’m trying to bridge the gap between the old school and the new school,” he says. “We’re trying to show the new generation something, and show the older generation something, too.”
That exchange plays out naturally on the remix. AL99 brings a contemporary approach to the track, while The Legendary Smooth B contributes the flow and lyrical experience developed across a career spanning four decades.
Smooth B has collaborated with artists including Gang Starr, New Kids on the Block, Slick Rick, Everlast, and Bobby Brown. He continues to record new music and is also set to appear in an upcoming documentary.
On “SUPERDUPER – Remix,” he arrives with a verse built around the song’s central idea:
I’m superduper, this ain’t no blooper
When I was born, they call me a trooper
The result gives each artist room to retain his own identity rather than asking one generation to imitate the other.
Passing the Crown in Brooklyn
The generational connection also became the central idea behind the song’s music video. AL99 and The Legendary Smooth B met in Brooklyn to film the visual with the team at IG Visualz.
Its imagery draws from the remix’s cover art, which depicts Smooth B passing a golden crown to AL99. In the video, the two perform side by side, turning that image into a visual representation of knowledge and influence moving from one era of hip hop to another.
The video was scheduled to drop on July 14, 2026, extending the collaboration beyond the recording itself and reinforcing the relationship between the artists.
Consistency Behind the Momentum
For AL99 and his label, TPC Music Production, the remix arrives during a busy period. AL99 now reaches tens of thousands of monthly listeners on Spotify, has accumulated hundreds of thousands of YouTube views, and has performed at venues across the East Coast.
He attributes that progress less to standing apart from every other artist than to continuing to work in a crowded field.
“There’s a lot of dope, talented people out there,” AL99 explains. “I’m not saying I’m the only one. But at the end of the day, it’s the consistency, and it’s the patience and the dedication, man. That’s what keeps it growing.”
That outlook fits the story behind “SUPERDUPER – Remix.” A track heard during a New York drive became the starting point for an unexpected collaboration between an artist building his audience and a hip hop veteran with decades of experience.
