Hitting a Sour Note: Addressing Depression in the Music Industry

By: Marilyn Montero from Marilyn Wellness Studio

The life of a musician, with its veneer of glamor and adulation, often belies the harsh realities that lurk behind the scenes. For many artists, the journey through music is fraught with mental health challenges, depression, and mood disorders being among the most prevalent. This stark contrast between public perception and personal turmoil reveals a troubling issue within the music industry.

Research has illuminated a distressing trend: musicians are three times more likely to suffer from depression compared to the general populace. The unique pressures of their profession—demanding schedules, relentless performance expectations, financial instability, and the loneliness inherent in touring—conspire to exact a heavy toll on their mental well-being.

Marilyn Montero, a clinical hypnotherapist with practices in Orange County and Los Angeles, California, sheds light on this phenomenon. “The music industry presents an incredibly stressful environment that can severely impact one’s mental health,” she notes. Montero’s extensive experience working with creatives has shown her firsthand how relentless exposure to criticism and rejection can erode an artist’s psychological defenses without adequate coping strategies and support networks.

Montero champions hypnotherapy as a potent tool for addressing these deep-seated mental health issues. She explains that depression stems from more than just surface-level thoughts; it is rooted in our subconscious beliefs, memories, and emotional patterns. Through hypnotherapy, individuals can access these underlying causes and initiate profound transformative shifts that traditional treatments may fail to achieve.

Alex*, a 32-year-old indie rock singer-songwriter, attests to the effectiveness of Montero’s methods. After grappling with severe depression exacerbated by the demands of touring, he sought out alternative solutions when conventional therapies provided only temporary relief. Despite initial skepticism towards hypnotherapy, Alex’s desperation led him to Montero’s door—a decision that would mark the beginning of his recovery journey.

Under Montero’s guidance, Alex embarked on a therapeutic process aimed at uncovering and resolving the root causes of his depression. Employing techniques such as hypnosis and visualization allowed him to confront and dismantle harmful subconscious beliefs and emotional patterns obstructing his path to wellness.

“The experience was akin to unraveling layers upon layers,” Alex recounts. Through meticulous exploration of deeply buried issues—including childhood trauma and fears of inadequacy—Alex discovered newfound insight into his condition. This comprehensive approach facilitated significant shifts in his perspective and emotional state.

Thanks to Montero’s intervention, Alex experienced remarkable improvements: stabilized moods, renewed creative vigor, and diminished performance anxiety. He reflects on his transformation with gratitude: “I’ve regained control over my mental health; I’m no longer enslaved by my emotions.”

Montero believes that stories like Alex’s underscore hypnotherapy’s potential as a transformative resource for artists battling depression within an unforgiving industry landscape. She advocates for greater awareness around mental health challenges faced by musicians and stresses the importance of accessible support mechanisms tailored to their unique needs.

Through her work with both emerging talents and established stars alike, Montero continues to demonstrate how leveraging the subconscious mind can facilitate healing beyond conventional means—”Depression need not be an indelible mark on one’s career or personal happiness,” she asserts confidently.

Alex now leverages his platform to champion mental health awareness within the musical community—an endeavor aimed at destigmatizing such struggles among peers while encouraging those affected to seek necessary assistance.

For musicians wrestling with similar demons in silence: “Reaching out for help could very well be your first step toward reclaiming your life,” Alex urges compellingly—a testament echoed by countless others who have walked this path under Marilyn Montero’s compassionate care.

ZOĒ’s Journey: From Chaos to Clarity Through Music

In the verdant landscapes of Southampton and Dorset, England, a young girl named ZOĒ found herself perpetually adrift. With each move from one town to another, her sense of self seemed to fray at the edges, leaving her ensnared in a maelstrom of identity crises. These formative years, marked by frequent relocations, sowed seeds of unrest within her soul. The incessant quest for belonging led ZOĒ down a path fraught with destructive behaviors during her teenage years. Seeking solace in drugs and alcohol, she attempted to numb the cacophony of anxieties and emotions that besieged her.

The turning tide came unexpectedly when ZOĒ’s journey took her thousands of miles away from the shores of England to the bustling metropolis of Dubai. There, amidst the desert’s embrace, she ventured into the realm of fashion, crafting exquisite abayas that garnered acclaim at the opening show for Arabic Fashion Week. Yet fate had other plans; a horse-riding accident steered her towards an encounter with Kundalini yoga—a serendipitous discovery that would alter the course of her life.

In the quietude brought about by Kundalini yoga, ZOĈ found not just healing but also her voice—literally and metaphorically. The practice of singing mantras unlocked doors she never knew existed within herself. This newfound passion burgeoned into an urge to share this transformative experience with others. Recording the closing mantra for her yoga classes was but a small step that led to a giant leap—the release of “Long Time Sun,” marking the inception of ZOĒ’s musical voyage.

ZOĒ’s music is not merely an auditory experience; it is a conduit for truth and inspiration drawn from the wellsprings of personal adversity. Her songs serve as lighthouses guiding listeners through their own tempests towards shores of tranquility and self-discovery. By weaving painful experiences into melodies, ZOĒ endeavors not only to heal herself but also to offer solace to those who find themselves lost in life’s tumultuous seas.

Now residing in Oxfordshire as both an artist and a mother, ZOĒ continues on her odyssey—creating music that uplifts and inspires. Her latest release “Time To Be Free,” which debuted on July 5th, encapsulates this ethos perfectly—a clarion call for liberation from whatever chains us.

ZOĒ’s music resonates deeply with listeners because it emanates from genuine experiences and unvarnished truths. It speaks to those who have wandered through dark valleys hoping to find light on some distant hilltop. Her journey underscores the transformative power of art and spirituality in navigating life’s vicissitudes and emerging stronger on the other side.

Through platforms like Spotify, where fans can stream her soul-stirring tracks, ZOĒ bridges distances between hearts around the globe. Each song serves as a testament to human resilience and our capacity for rebirth amidst ruin.

ZOĒ’s odyssey—from Southampton’s shifting sands to Dorset’s pastoral calmness; from Dubai’s opulent tapestry back to England’s serene expenses—is more than just physical movement across geographies; it symbolizes an inward pilgrimage towards peace and self-realization through music.

Her tale is one many can draw strength from—a reminder that it is possible to transmute pain into beauty if we dare listen deeply enough not just to music but also within ourselves. For those wandering in search of their identities or battling inner demons, let ZOË’s melodious journey serve as your guiding star towards healing and freedom.

In essence, ZOÈ embodies resilience—a beacon showcasing how embracing our authentic selves can lead us out from under shadowy valleys onto sunlit paths unknown before our trials began.

As you tune into “Time To Be Free” or any track off ZOË’s discography, remember you’re listening not merely notes strung together harmoniously but stories woven painstakingly out tears transformed into tales—each note carrying echoes from past storms weathered triumphantly en route serenity now held dear.

J. Irja holds nothing back with her new single, Hate2SeeMeWin

For real music lovers, one of the most frustrating things that can happen is finding a new favorite artist and seeing them drop off the map. J. Irja was poised to take off in 2023 with records with majors like Benny the Butcher, Twista, Royce da 5’9 and a knockout club track called “Go Time” in rotation. With her bold and daring head tattoo, half-shaved head, unapologetic blunt posts and videos, and some serious talent to back it up, anyone could have believed it was her time to break through. Then, she stopped releasing music.

Why would this happen? At the height of her career, why would she just stop? There might be a hint at the answer with her new single “Hate2SeeMeWin.” If everything she had already been through (head injuries, PTSD, DID, trafficking, the passing of her sister, and so much more) wasn’t enough, she seems to be alluding that the very people she was lifting up during that time started knocking her down. She sure has run into more than her fair share of hard times, and dedicated followers know how difficult her road has been. That difficult journey is one thing that many listeners love about J. Irja, and how open she is about describing the hardships she endured and how she pulled out of it. Dedicated fans and new listeners alike can be seen commenting on her videos, posts, and lives, describing how refreshing and motivational it is that she puts herself out there to be judged, all so others can see they are not alone and they can overcome any obstacle in their way.

Hate2SeeMeWin lyrics are telling this roller coaster of a story, but there is a lot of reading between the lines to do. It isn’t completely clear who she is addressing, but there seems to be the possibility of rap beef brewing- which could be interesting to watch. In the past, a few lackluster rappers have taken their aim at J. Irja, but she never bothered to even respond on the track. There is every indication that this time may be different if the right person pushes her to step into the ring. As for right now, J. Irja seems content working on herself and building the best version of her own life while using the mic to vent. Cross-referencing her social media posts shows that she has been doing a lot of the work herself and even edited this video on her own.

In the studio, she built it with her own two hands. She has been going live, showing every step of the process- from building her desks while listening to new instrumentals to showing us her music video editing process as she heals from her facial procedures that are aimed to help heal her facial injuries.

Is this the Phoenix rising from the ashes story fans have been waiting to see from J. Irja? No one can be exactly sure, but checking out the Hate2SeeMeWin music video can help music aficionados decide for themselves. With everything going on in the industry right now, it could surely use a rags-to-riches redemption story. Only time will tell how this plays out. Either way, this track is a fiery new single with the potential to set the playing field for something even more amazing to come.

As a last note, it is interesting to see the many new depths in J. Irja’s personality and life emerging through the music and her social media content. She even just graduated summa cum laude with her bachelors degree in Leadership and Organizational Development. One thing remains true: J. Irja is owning her past, pushing through her present challenges, and putting it all on display to motivate others around her to win. Even though some of those people hate to see it.

Hurt Season: From Shadows to Stardom Through Song

By: Maria Williams

Canada’s Hurt Season is making a statement—not just any statement—a declaration of rebirth, rediscovery, and re-emergence in the music scene. This 23-year-old artist, known for his raw emotion and relentless ambition, is turning his past trials into elegantly woven musical triumphs with his latest mixtape, MB4Everything. Initially known as HRT SZN, Hurt’s current work showcases his growth journey by highlighting his pursuit of authenticity.

Early Struggles

Before celebrating his 23rd birthday, Hurt Season’s unique sound caught the attention of industry giants, producer David Foster and rapper Snoop Dogg. Simultaneously, he started to make a name for himself in fashion modeling. However, the pressure of early successes brought significant challenges. As detailed in his profile by Rolling Stone, Hurt Season battled with addiction, a struggle that temporarily sidelined his creative pursuits.

Yet, these setbacks did not define him. Instead, they fueled his determination to overcome and inspire through his music. His sound draws from various sources, from the innovative spirit of Jean-Michel Basquiat and the avant-garde fashion sense of Rick Owens to the raw energy of 1990s West Coast underground rap. The diverse sounds of Crooked I and Bon Iver, which once dominated his iPod, now infuse Hurt Season’s music, reflecting his experiences living in British Columbia, Atlanta, and Los Angeles.

The Genesis of MB4Everything

With the release of MB4Everything, Hurt Season is announcing his resurgence into the music scene. Produced under his independent label, Marble Bust Entertainment, the project takes listeners on Hurt’s journey from addiction to the peaks of artistic revival.

Each track represents a milestone in his personal growth and musical development narrative. Tracks like “datreesh” and “darkstar” demonstrate Hurt’s talent for blending poignant lyrics with captivating beats. The tracks are designed to touch and inspire anyone who has faced their battles and sought redemption through perseverance.

Musical Inspirations and New Directions

Since childhood, music has been Hurt Season’s refuge, from listening to Santana on road trips in Mexico to using songwriting to process life’s chaos. His current sound is influenced by artists like XXXTentacion, 7981 Kal, and Pierce the Veil, blending emo-rap with a personal touch that makes his music uniquely his own.

However, the change from HRT SZN to Hurt Season is more than a new stage name. It represents a shift in his personal and artistic identity. “The new name and project more accurately reflect who I am,” he explains. “It shows someone less concerned with external criticism and more focused on being true to himself.”

Looking Ahead

As MB4Everything hits the airwaves, it is clear that Hurt Season’s career trajectory is poised to skyrocket. With a renewed focus and a commitment to genuine self-expression, he is ready to create his legacy in the music industry. However, the story and music of the Hurt season are not just about revival. They are also about the relentless pursuit of becoming one’s true self in the ever-evolving world of music.

His narrative of overcoming adversity while remaining authentic aims to resonate with a broad audience, empowering and inspiring those who have hit their bumps in the road to pursue their dreams.

In a recent interview, HeIsTheArtist opened up about his inspirations, musical journey, and the profound role of faith in his art.

An Homage to Classic Musicals

The inspiration behind “Dreaming In Emerald City (Wicked Deluxe Edition)” stems from HeIsTheArtist’s love for classic musicals, specifically “The Wizard of Oz” and “West Side Story.” He shares, “The Wizard of Oz and West Side Story are two of my favorite musicals. My covers, such as ‘I’m Always Chasing Rainbows,’ pay homage to ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ and my Latin original song ‘Mi Amor’ pays homage to ‘West Side Story.'” These musicals’ themes of self-love and empathy naturally influenced the EP’s songwriting process, creating a heartfelt and nostalgic collection of tracks.

Blending Genres with Ease

HeIsTheArtist’s unique sound is a seamless blend of Broadway-style vocals and neo-soul elements. His background in musical theater vocal lessons and summer camps made this fusion effortless. “As a kid, I took musical theater vocal lessons and went to musical theater summer camps, so the blending of the two was pretty easy because I’m well-versed in both genres,” he explains. This versatility allows him to create music that resonates deeply with listeners, regardless of genre boundaries.

A New Interpretation of a Classic

The EP opens with a cover of Judy Garland’s “I’m Always Chasing Rainbows.” HeIsTheArtist was drawn to this classic song because of its natural fit into the nostalgic lo-fi genre. “Lo-fi music is very popular now, and the song naturally fits into that genre. I didn’t have to do much except sing it in my vocal range,” he notes. This approach breathes new life into the timeless tune while maintaining its original charm.

Celebrating Love Through Covers

“Dreaming In Emerald City (Wicked Deluxe Edition)” features covers of songs by Minnie Riperton, Whitney Houston, Rihanna, and India.Arie. These selections were easy for HeIsTheArtist, as they are songs he grew up loving. “All of the covers on my EP were songs that I already loved to listen to growing up. Those four songs are naturally the epitome of love songs, in my opinion,” he says. Each cover contributes to the EP’s overarching narrative of love and empathy, resonating with listeners on a profound level.

Global Success and Managerial Support

HeIsTheArtist’s music has found a global audience, with singles like “Mi Amor” reaching #2 on the UK iTunes R&B charts and “I Believe in You and Me” hitting #9. He attributes this success to his dedicated management team. “It feels great to know that people are resonating with my music on a global scale. I would mostly have to thank my great manager, Michael Stover at MTS Management, for the increasing global success of my music,” he acknowledges.

He describes these upcoming releases as his most raw and edgy works to date. “Both are definitely my most raw projects to date. They can definitely expect that both projects are going to be very exciting, raw, and edgy, while still maintaining the message of God in between the lines,” he reveals.

Faith at the Core

Faith plays a central role in HeIsTheArtist’s music and life. His journey as a Christian R&B artist has seen his musical themes expand while remaining rooted in biblical messages. “Over time, the musical themes I have explored as a Christian artist have expanded. However, all of my themes are taken straight from the Bible, from themes of love to themes of forgiveness taken straight from God’s glorious mouth,” he explains.

A Vision for the Future

HeIsTheArtist’s goals and aspirations for his music career are deeply intertwined with his faith. He hopes to spread the gospel through his music and convey deeper biblical messages as his career progresses. “I hope to spread the gospel through my music to as many people as possible around the world and also convey deeper biblical messages as my career progresses,” he shares.

With his soulful voice, heartfelt lyrics, and unwavering faith, HeIsTheArtist is poised to continue making a significant impact in the world of Christian R&B. His music not only entertains but also inspires and uplifts, spreading messages of love, empathy, and faith to a global audience.
