Ariana DeBose kicked off the show by saying, “Broadway’s back, baby. And she’s waiting for you.”
Sunday Night’s Tony Awards marks the 75th year of the ceremony, coming back to Radio City Music Hall following three years of hiatus to celebrate Broadway’s most prominent talents.
The awards show, hosted by DeBose – who recently snagged her Oscar award as Anita in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story – conducts the first-ever comeback to its original month and venue since before the pandemic. It also marks the first time in Tony Awards history that it broadcast live coast-to-coast.
The ceremony will be aired on CBS, and Paramount+ – coverage will be split.
On the Paramount+ hour, numerous favored shows snatched golden trophies such as Six for Best Costume Design and Best Original Score of a Musical and MJ for Best Sound Design and Best Lighting Design of a Musical.
On the other hand, CBS brought the show to a celebratory mood at its opening, highlighting DeBose flaunting her skills with a mash-up performance of modern and past musicals.
