Filmmaker Rajamouli Announces ‘RRR’ Follow-up

The sequel to the Indian action movie is coming.

Director SS Rajamouli has announced that he is now working on a sequel to the film. Screenwriter V. Vijayendra Prasad, the director’s father, is working on the script.

“My father is the story writer for all my films. We discussed a bit about [the sequel]. And he’s working on the story,” Rajamouli revealed.

The film is one of the highest budgeted films in India with a gross cost of $72 million. Moreover, since the opening in March, it has been a great success.

RRR focuses on the journey of real Indian freedom fighters Komaram Bheem and Alluri Sitarama Raju. It is set in the 1920s with N.T. Rama Rao Jr. and Ram Charan as the main cast.

The historical novel focuses on the friendship and fight between the two against British imperialists. In addition, the epic is noted for its action scenes and elaborate battle choreography.

Since its release, it has been considered the most popular film on Netflix. Furthermore, people played it over 47 million hours with 15 subtitles. It’s also the first time a non-English language film has trended for the 10th consecutive week.

Moreover, the director shared his amazement that the movie drew in a huge fanbase all over the world.

“Yes, I was surprised with the reception from the West,” he stated.

“A good story is a good story for everyone. But I didn’t think I could make films for Western sensibilities. I never believed myself. So, when it came out on Netflix and people started watching it, and word of mouth started spreading, when the critics started giving out good reviews, yes, I was really, really surprised.”

RRR is currently India’s second-highest-grossing film. In addition, it is a smash hit at the global box office. It had earned almost 89% of its $100 million global sales from international theaters.
