Actor James Marsden Reveals Surprising Moment in the Middle of Jury Duty Trial

James Marsden, an actor, recently disclosed that his time sitting as a jury in Los Angeles was quite the experience. He spoke about his one real-life jury duty experience, which served as the basis for his new Amazon FreeVee series Jury Duty, in a conversation with PEOPLE.

Marsden described the strange experience of entering the courtroom and seeing a wall of headshots of actors who had previously participated in jury duty. “I was thinking in my mind, ‘Well, if anybody recognizes me, then maybe I would be a distraction,'” he recalled. “I don’t know. I wasn’t really trying to get off jury duty.”

However, when a lawyer unexpectedly complimented Marsden’s acting job in the middle of the trial, it proved that his concerns about being a distraction were unwarranted. “The prosecuting attorney was like, ‘Can I talk to James Marsden for a second?'” he said. “And then he said, ‘I just wanted to say I’m a fan. I loved you in Enchanted.’ And I’m like, ‘Uh, thank you.'”

Marsden didn’t let this unexpected interruption deter him from doing his job as a jury. “I’m trying to stay focused and not think about how awkward this is,” he said. “But it was funny. And then we went right back to the trial.”

The experience of Marsden as a juror is similar to that of countless other Americans who have been required to carry out their civic duty. But because of the actor’s fame, the situation took an unexpected turn.

Marsden admitted that he was a distraction for one of the attorneys in addition to receiving accolades for his acting work during a trial.

“In the middle of an opening argument, he turned to me and he goes, ‘And I’ve loved everything you’ve done,'” Marsden said, laughing. The trial was for “an eviction case or something,” he added.

Marsden admitted that he almost tried to leave after that comment, but he remembered where he was. “It was a courthouse with a wall full of headshots, so they’re gonna love that,” he said.

Despite the distraction, Marsden took his role as a juror seriously and fulfilled his civic duty. This experience inspired his new Amazon Freevee series Jury Duty, in which he plays an exaggerated version as a member of a jury.
